DENMARK REPORTS INCREASE IN SHOPLIFTING

Danish TV and radio company Danmarks Radio reported that «in the last six months, almost 23% more thefts were registered in stores compared to the same period last year. This is evidenced by data from the National Police,» the publication said. The main reasons for this seem to be crisis and rising inflation rates in the country. Before the crisis, there was a gradual steady decline in the number of thefts, while today’s figures are a record for the last five years.

Store owners across the country are closing self-service checkouts, locking their windows and installing additional alarms to secure their assortment. There is also a growing interest in buying stolen goods as they are sold at lower prices than in supermarkets.

The crisis and inflationary shock is experienced by EU countries due to large-scale sanctions. In a number of states, negative indicators have become historic. According to Eurostat, annual inflation in 19 eurozone countries in August amounted to a record 9.1%, in the European Union it became double-digit — 10.1%.
